I'd Like To Thank My Agent...

Well hey, here’s some good news: Emdashes.com has been recognized as a 2008 Webby Award Honoree. I created illustrations for the site under the direction of Patric and Su at House of Pretty. Congratulations to the guys and of course to ebullient reporter Emily on the award!

At the Ballpark

I’ll be out of the office all day Monday the 31st at the Cleveland Indians’ home opener against the White Sox. Of course it’s supposed to rain all day. Go Tribe!

Yippee ki-yay

The Winery at Wolf Creek’s peach wine Space Cowboy has just been bottled, featuring one of the new label designs I worked on. It’s a tribute to the famous scene near the end of Doctor Strangelove in which Slim Pickens rides an atomic bomb as it falls through the sky. Yee haw.

I Suppose, If I Have To

If you, like me, hate Windows and refuse to have it sullying up your machine, but do have the need to test websites you’re developing in Internet Explorer (oh, and you have an Intel processor), then ies4osx might be for you.

Upgrade

Things are moving a lot quicker in the studio this week, thanks to a desktop upgrade. The old G4 iMac is being replaced by this beauty of a machine, the new aluminum and glass iMac with 24-inch monitor. It’s solid, speedy, and best of all, silent. I won’t be missing the constant jet engine fan noise from the old desktop one bit, though I have to give it credit for being an otherwise decent and dependable computer for the last four years. Cheers to Apple, they’ve done well with their iMac line.

Singled Out

While Steve Heller may have a point about folksy hand-lettering being a trend in jeopardy of becoming a cliché, I think his Brief Message steps over the line by singling out the portfolio of an artist working successfully in the style. A less exclusive example would have been more appropriate.

Master of the Macabre

“His art includes spooky books, glassware, scarves ... His looks match diabolical humor, love of macabre ... His cartoons give homey situations a horrible twist.”

From an article on Charles Addams, LOOK magazine, 1953.
